The Town Attorney is appointed by the Town Board, as well as The Deputy Town attorney, who both serve on a part-time basis. The Town Attorney is the head of the Law Department , which includes the Deputy Town Attorney and two staff members.

As head of the Law Department, the Town Attorney is responsible for advising the Town Board on all general legal matters affecting the Town and also advises the other departments within the Town. The Town Attorney manages the staff and is responsible for proposing and managing the departments annual budget.

The Town Attorney also handles all of the Court proceedings involving violations of Town Law and the Town's Vehicle and Traffic Code. The Town Attorney also handles many litigation matters; such as Article 78 Challenges to Zoning, Planning, and other board decisions.

In addition to being liaison to numerous boards and committees, the Town Attorney advises the Zoning Board of Appeals, the Planning Board, and the Architectural Review Board. The Town Attorney's office works closely with the Building Department with respect to these boards and with respect to enforcement to the Town's Building Code.

Finally, the Town Attorney is also responsible to supervise and monitor all of the Town's outside counsels who assist the Town with complicated litigations involving such things as Zoning and Planning, Civil Rights, Personal Injury claims, Tax Certiorari claims, Bond Counsel, and Workers' Compensastion claims. The Town Attorney works closely with the Town's insurance agents and third party administrators to monitor these claims and is also responsible for recommending settlement to the Town Board. The department also works very closely with the Assessor's and Receiver of Taxes office regarding tax certiorari claims and tax delinquency matters.

The Law Department is staffed with two very highly competent staff members who are full-time and who assist the Town Attorney and Deputy Town Attorney with conducting the business of the Law Department.

The Law Department is open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
